Special Collections: Using the Special Collections

Welcome

We are pleased to welcome both members and visitors to the Library.  Advance notice of your visit is not required but is appreciated and strongly encouraged.  Our facility is equipped with wifi should you need it, and one computer dedicated to searching our catalog while you're here.

We request that all visitors complete a Researcher Card and pay $25 per day for access to the collections.    The Researcher Card may be found here.  All of our items in Special Collections are stored in our vaults, so you will need to complete call slips so that staff may retrieve items for you.  The call slip form may be found hereIf you anticipate requiring assistance during your visit, please let us know and we will be happy to assist.   If you are unable to visit the library in-person, we do offer limited research services, for a fee.  The Library occasionally restricts access to materials in the Special Collections based on condition, size, or rarity.  Have a look at our Research Request Form here and let us know if you have any questions.  Email librarian@charlestonlibrarysociety.org if you have any questions.

Useful information

Our online catalog was introduced in 2013.  We have added descriptions of all of the items in our Special Collections and have worked hard to create rich, accurate records to assist our members, visitors, and online researchers. Keyword searches bring up records that contain that word anywhere within the record, often resulting in too many titles.  To limit your hits, you can filter your results by Date, Location, Format, Language, etc.

You can also email titles to yourself for quick reference to save time before your visit.  If you have any questions about the online catalog, please email librarian@charlestonlibrarysociety.org or call our friendly circulation desk at 843-723-9912.  We are always happy to assist you in your endeavors!
