The interactive map below shows an 1855 map of Charleston's wards and important locations, overlayed on a modern map. The stars indicate the location of various police stations mentioned within this guide, as well as the city jail and the modern location of the Charleston Library Society where these records are currently held. Please keep in mind that our current library building opened in 1914, and would not have existed contemporaneously with these records.
Use the vertical slider to compare the modern map with the 1855 map layer. Click the layers button in the bottom right corner to toggle the map overlay and location layers on and off. View the legend with the top button in the upper right corner, and search for locations with the bottom button in the upper right corner. Please not that the search function only searches addresses, not items from the police locations layer. The + and - buttons in the upper left allow you to zoom in and out, and the house button in the upper left returns you to the original map extent.
